The chinchilla is a 100% herbivore. Chinchillas survive in the wild on a very meagre diet, eating mainly dry grasses, herbs and shrubs. The digestive system tolerates little sugar, no fat or moist constituents.
Chinchillas are crepuscular animals. In other words, they are mainly active in the evening and at night. This is also important to consider when feeding these animals. Therefore, it is best to feed the animals in the early evening as it is at this time of day that they start to become active.
In its natural environment, the chinchilla keeps its coat clean by bathing in a sand bath. It is therefore advisable to always have a sand bath available for your chinchillas.
